An actual high schooler is taking over the role of Evan Hansen on Broadway
Broadway has found its newest Evan Hansen—and he’s actually still in high school. In January, 16-year-old Andrew Barth Feldman will be making his Broadway debut as one of the most iconic characters in recent theater history.
The high school junior will take over the title role in Dear Evan Hansen from Taylor Trensch, who has played the character since January of this year. The musical debuted in late 2016 to instant acclaim, winning six Tony Awards—including Best Musical and Leading Actor in a Musical for Ben Platt, who first tackled the role. The Real O’Neals star Noah Galvin also starred in the show, taking over for Platt for a limited run in late 2017.
According to The New York Times, Feldman is not only the first teen to take on the character, but his July audition for Dear Evan Hansen was his very first Broadway audition ever (producers discovered him during a performance at the National High School Musical Theater Awards earlier this year). Feldman told The Times that he had to keep the news under wraps for a while.
We’re sure they’ll understand, buddy. Feldman will be making his big debut as Evan Hansen on January 30th, 2019.
