Sometimes the most beautiful gifts in life come in the most bittersweet packages. And this mom’s letter to her daughter before dying is one of the sweetest and most heart-wrenching things we’ve seen in quite a while.

Eighteen-year-old Hannah Summers posted the letter from her mother, Peggy, on Twitter (Peggy wrote to each of her four children and husband separately) after her mom died of kidney cancer last week. She told BuzzFeed that she initially wasn’t going to share the letter, but that the more she read it, the more she felt people would connect with its message.

“[She was] so loving and caring and always worried about others more than herself. I can’t even imagine how hard it was for her to write the letter, but she knew it was something that we would need in order to get some type of closure,” Summers said.

Even as she was dying, her mom was grateful.

And there was practical advice, too.

And thoughts about the future.

Her mom added in the letter, “Remember that I am still with you and still just as proud of you as I always have been.”

As hard as the letter is to read, Summers added that she’ll never stop being grateful for it. “I’m never going to take it for granted, because so many people out there who have lost a parent wish for something like this,” she said.

Hopefully, Hannah and her family find some comfort in knowing just how much their mom loved them. Let’s use this as a reminder to be kind to each other every day, and to hug our loved ones extra close.
