This mom got shamed for breastfeeding at Disneyland, and her response was epic
Brittni Medina has been breastfeeding her son for 10 months, so when her baby needs to eat, she does what she has to do to make sure he is fed and happy. But like many women, Medina has faced judgment for breastfeeding in public. While waiting in line during a trip to Disneyland, Medina was shamed for breastfeeding her child, so she decided to clap back at her haters in a Facebook post.
She posted a picture of her breastfeeding her son, uncovered, while two women scowled in the background. She explained the photo with a caption.
In an interview with PopSugar, Medina said that she and her husband could hear the two women in the photo loudly saying that Medina should feed her baby in the bathroom. Hearing their vocalized criticism gave her the idea to take the picture, and she even stepped a little closer to her critics to make sure they were captured on film.
Breastfeeding in public has often been construed as being inappropriate or overly sexual, but there is nothing inherently sexual about a woman feeding her children. Given that people still shame women for public breastfeeding, it’s refreshing to see someone who does not let judgment from others affect the way she raises her children. The decision to breastfeed or not is a personal choice and involves many complex factors, and women can’t always control when their baby needs to eat. Parents know their babies best, and should be free to care for their children without being ridiculed.
Medina told PopSugar that she had faced criticism even when she covered her first child while breastfeeding. “I covered with my first son, but honestly people will complain no matter what you do,” she said.
We love that Medina was able to laugh at her critics and use this negative experience to educate others about the realities of being a mom. And we hope that, in the future, other women will feel empowered to feed their children however they feel is best.
