Hey Trump administration, here’s something to chew on. Michelle Obama has a strong message for anyone who tries to mess with her school lunch program: “Don’t play with our children.”
A champion of kids of all ages, the former first lady and children’s nutrition advocate did not mince words during a Q&A as part of the Partnership for a Healthier America Summit on Friday, questioning why anyone — including government officials — would thwart efforts to provide healthier school meals for children. “You have to stop and think: Why don’t we want kids to have good food at schools?”, asked Obama to thunderous applause. “What is wrong with you?”
And Obama was just getting warmed up. Indirectly calling out the current administration’s recent decision to rollback nutrition policies central to her Let’s Move! campaign to combat childhood obesity, including the throwing out of sodium limits and whole grains requirements for school lunches, Obama accused opponents of her signature initiative of playing politics and, as a mother, pleaded with parents to consider why government officials care so little about feeding children nutritious meals.
“I don’t care what state you live in. Take me out of the equation. Like me, don’t like me. But think about why someone is okay with your kids eating crap,” said Obama, adding, “Because here’s the secret. If somebody is doing that, they don’t care about your kid.”
Unfortunately, school lunches aren’t the only Obama-era provision on the Trump White House’s menu. Last week, the administration put on the back burner a rule requiring restaurants, movie theaters, and grocery stores to post their offerings’ calorie counts.
“This just isn’t that complicated, you know?” said Obama. “Just tell me what’s in my food. Why is there a problem?”
One thing’s for sure: No matter what, Michelle Obama’s still got our back.
We love you, Michelle!
