Meghan Markle was recently kidnapped, but don't worry, there's a good explanation why
Preparing for a wedding requires a lot of work. You need to create and send out invitations, organize a seating chart, make sure you’ve hired all the appropriate vendors, go to dress fittings, attend dance lessons, and register for gifts. And, if you’re Meghan Markle, you also need to get kidnapped. Yes, it’s true: Meghan Markle was recently kidnapped, but don’t worry, there’s a good reason why.
Markle, as you know, is set to become the newest member of the British royal family when she weds Prince Harry on May 19th. Joining one of the most famous families in the world comes with a certain amount of very serious danger. This is why Markle had to undergo a staged kidnapping with elite army forces.
Imagine being stressed about your wedding, and having to worry about being kidnapped on top of everything else. Yikes!
Markle recently spent two days in the English countryside going through security training sessions, which is where she was “kidnapped.” According to the British newspaper Daily Express, the exercises she had to undergo included a “kidnap and rescue” portion. Markle was fake-kidnapped, and then watched as forces from the Royal Army’s SAS regiment used live ammunition to rescue her. That actually sounds pretty terrifying.
A former SAS officer explained to the Express that live ammo was required to help Markle learn what “real gunfire” would sound like if she was kidnapped for real.
The training also included lessons on how to form a relationship with potential kidnappers, which is supposed to be better than trying to escape. She also had sessions that taught her how to act in worst-case scenarios. A former senior Army intelligence officer said that this kind of training is “the toughest.”
Markle isn’t the only one who has been through this. Nearly every senior royal aside from the queen has been through something similar. Kate Middleton, however, didn’t do her training until after her wedding. So why did Markle do it now? Apparently, she has “heightened security issues at this time,” which is a scary thought.
Luckily, it seems like Markle is in good hands. She currently has round-the-clock protection, and her wedding will be one of the most-guarded events of the year, as she and Harry will be watched by an elite unit of 30 SAS soldiers. Plus, Markle is a total badass. She’s got this.
