All eyes are on today’s March For Our Lives rallies in Washington, D.C. and across the world. And whether you can’t be there in person or prefer to stream it from the comfort of home, we should all be listening — mostly to the student survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the organizers behind the march who have since taken up the fight for gun control in America.
While there are various celebrities expected to attend and lend their support, March For Our Lives belongs to the students, from both Parkland and beyond. There’s outspoken activist Emma González, who gave a rousing speech at an anti-gun rally just three days after the Parkland shooting. There’s David Hogg, another vocal survivor who was horrifyingly accused of being a “crisis actor.” There’s Sarah Chadwick, who created a spot-on parody of an NRA ad just a few weeks ago. And there’s Edna Chavez, a 17-year-old student from Los Angeles who lost her brother to gun violence.
The overwhelming support for the Parkland students has ignited a national conversation about gun reform, one that looks like it might have the traction to inspire real change. Sadly, not much has been done to improve gun control since the Sandy Hook tragedy, when shooter Adam Lanza killed 26 people — including 20 children — in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.
HelloGiggles stands with the March For Our Lives students and participants across the world.
