Mandy Moore discussed Wilmer Valderrama's very public lie about taking her virginity, and this is important
Before she was on This is Us, Mandy Moore was the teen It-girl of the aughts, capturing our hearts since her song “Candy” came out in 1999. But the singer and actress has been open about how stardom sometimes kept her from having a normal private life as a teen. In a recent interview, she opened up about one of these instances, when her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, lied about taking her virginity in the most public way: on The Howard Stern Show.
According to Elle, Moore and Valderrama dated from 2001 to 2002 — when the actress was still a teenager. Four years later, in 2006, the That ’70s Show actor claimed in an interview with Howard Stern that he and Moore had sex, which he said was “good, but wasn’t like warm apple pie” (ugh). She later went on to dismiss these rumors in an Elle interview, saying it was “utterly tacky, not even true, and it hurt my feelings because I like him.”
On The Howard Stern Show yesterday, June 6th, Moore once again laid this rumor to rest, saying that she did not lose her virginity to Valderrama and that she was stunned by his lie.
Moore added that Valderrama was her “first real, true boyfriend” and said that she was (justifiably) upset that he had spread a patently untrue rumor about her. She remembered calling Valderrama after the interview to call him out on his lie.
“I was like, ‘Why would you ever talk about that to anybody, first of all?'” Moore told Stern.
Stern went on to say that Valderrama later asked him to take down the 2006 interview.
Thankfully, Moore has moved on. Aside from starring on This is Us, she’s also in the midst of planning her wedding to fiancé Taylor Goldsmith.
Valderrama’s public lie violated Moore’s privacy in the most sleazy way. We’re glad that Moore has moved past this, and we hope that Valderrama now knows that honesty (and discretion) is the best policy.
