Mandy Moore revealed more about her "unhealthy" dynamic with ex-husband Ryan Adams—"I had no sense of self"
On the February 18th episode of “WTF with Marc Maron,” Mandy Moore opened up about her “unhealthy” dynamic with ex-husband Ryan Adams. Moore, who was married to Adams between 2009 and 2016, was one of several women who recently accused the musician of sexual and emotional abuse via a February 13th New York Times exposé.
Moore said she finally left Adams when it felt like she was drowning. “It was so untenable and unsustainable and it was so lonely,” she added. “I was so sad. I was lonely with him.” The This Is Us actress said that she only took small acting jobs during their marriage because their relationship “fell apart” when she focused on goals outside of their marriage. Adams, a prolific singer-songwriter, had promised Moore he would help her continue her singing career when they first met and discouraged her from working with other managers and producers. But he never followed through, and even gave her booked studio time to other artists.
Moore said their unhealthy dynamic—and his control issues—prevented her from releasing new music for years. And he restricted her acting career as well. “I couldn’t do my job because there was a constant stream of trying to pay attention to this person who needed me and wouldn’t let me do anything else,” she said.
We’re so glad Moore made it through—and is seemingly stronger than ever. In addition to starring in one of the most beloved television shows in decades (ahem, This Is Us), Moore also recently married musician Taylor Goldsmith and says she plans to release new music with him soon. We can’t wait to hear it.
