Cher sings in the latest "Mamma Mia!" trailer, and no, we will not calm down about it
Some people have all the luck. Not only did Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie in Mamma Mia! get Meryl Streep for a mom — she gets Cher for a grandma. And in the latest trailer out for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, grandma shows off her famous pipes, making us all even more jealous — yes, it’s possible — that she’s not part of our families.
We’re still not *quite* over the fact that the Mamma Mia! sequel kills off Donna (Streep), but Cher’s larger-than-life presence does help a little. (Okay, A LOT.) The new teaser, like its predecessors, centers on Sophie’s pregnancy, and how it makes her feel extra close to her late mom — and brings about flashbacks to Donna’s youth, with Downton Abbey‘s Lily James as Young Donna in those flashbacks.
In the present day, Grandma Cher shows up apparently uninvited (though, really, who would turn away *CHER*?). The singer appears with platinum blonde hair, and is looking to get the party started. Oh, and we get our first glimpse of Cher singing in the film. She #blesses us with ABBA classic “Fernando” like the vocal legend she is, and that sound you hear is us screaming about how freaking fabulous this moment is.
Honestly though, we may never recover, but in the best way.
We found out Cher was joining the cast back in October and have been impatiently waiting for more details about and peeks at her hush-hush role. And we were gifted with this look on January 28th during a certain major awards show…Considering what a musical powerhouse she is, it was really only appropriate that the Cher-centric teaser dropped during Sunday night’s Grammy awards, right? Right!
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hits theaters July 20th, so get your silver platform boots ready. And while we wait, let’s all hope we get another fabulous glance at Grandma Cher!
