When we heard that Lizzie McGuire is getting a sequel, our inner Lizzie cartoons were shrieking with excitement. Finally, our early-2000s TV bestie is back, but all grown up like us. Since the announcement, we’ve been eagerly awaiting more details about Lizzie’s return to the small screen. But now that we have them, we don’t know how to feel about the intel.

In the sequel, coming to the new streaming service Disney+, Lizzie has just turned 30 and is living her dream as an interior designer in New York City. Our girl is killing it, just like we imagined she would be. I mean, if you can pull off pretending to be an Italian pop star at 16 years old, what can’t you do? To top it off, Lizzie is engaged to a chef in the city, which is super exciting—but there’s a catch. His name is not Gordo.

Excuse us while we recover from this devastating news. Where did that sweet kiss in Rome lead Lizzie and Gordo, and how did it end with them not together? We need answers.

Apparently, Hilary Duff isn’t as upset about Lizzie and Gordo’s lack of relationship as we are.

In an interview with Vulture, Duff revealed her thoughts on Lizzie’s adult love life.

Yes, Hilary, it does hurt. We were blessed with two seasons of loving Lizzie and Gordo’s adorable friendship, followed by feeling heartbroken for Gordo as he watched Lizzie ride off on a moped with an Italian pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Then, the pair finally shared a kiss on a rooftop in Rome, and that’s it? Where is Gordo now?

Luckily, there’s still hope for our favorite preteen (now adult) TV couple to reunite.

We completely agree. It just wouldn’t feel like Lizzie McGuire without her curly-haired best bud by her side, even if that’s the extent of their relationship now. We’re crossing our fingers that Gordo makes a surprise return in the sequel series—because that’s what dreams are made of.
