Kristen Stewart opened up about why she kept her relationship with Robert Pattinson so private
Whether you’re a former Twihard (or current, no judgment) or you love her for her indie roles, Kristen Stewart fans can all agree on one thing: The Charlie’s Angels star has remained mostly mum about her former relationship with Robert Pattinson. But in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K., the 29-year-old actor breaks that silence and explains why she kept her ultra-high profile relationship so close to the vest.
“When me and Rob were together, we did not have an example to go by,” she told the magazine. “So much was taken from us that, in trying to control one aspect, we were just like, ‘No, we will never talk about it. Never. Because it’s ours.’”
Stewart and Pattinson met on set of Twilight in 2008 and began dating soon after.
Although the pair were already headed toward fame, their relationship arguably launched them into a whole new level of super-stardom. Despite that insane level of media attention, Stewart remained protective over her relationship. (“I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them,” she told Elle in a 2010 interview.)
Stewart never really played into the fame game in general, she told Harper’s Bazaar U.K., which earned her a good amount of backlash from the media and a certain sect of the public that expected her to play into the typical “teen queen media darling” paradigm.
Since she and Pattinson split in 2013, Stewart hasn’t necessarily been more forthcoming about the details of her relationships.
But she has been open about her sexuality—which we think takes guts, considering that, in the past, she was literally told, “’If you just like do yourself a favor, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.'”
“I just think we’re all kind of getting to a place where—I don’t know, evolution’s a weird thing—we’re all becoming incredibly ambiguous,” she concluded. “And it’s this really gorgeous thing.”
We think it’s pretty gorgeous, too. (We’re not mad at the gorgeous Chanel gowns the cover star wears in the Harper’s Bazaar U.K. story, either.)
