Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell started dating all the way back in 2007, and they’ve always been candid with fans about their relationship and subsequent marriage—specifically about the fact that things aren’t as easy as they seem. And in a new joint interview with People, Bell got real about what it was like to fall in love with Shepard, and why it wasn’t at all like it is in the movies.
Shepard agreed, adding, “We definitely had to work really hard at being a couple because we’re both incredibly, painfully stubborn, and we’re pretty much opposites.”
The couple has been open in the past about how it definitely wasn’t love at first sight when they met, as well as that they used to have a lot of “toxic” fights before they worked on healthy communication and attended couple’s counseling. Shepard also opened up about why he ultimately proposed to Bell—even though he doesn’t technically believe in the concept of marriage.
So there you have it. There definitely was no grand declarations of love with a boombox for these two—and honestly, we’re glad. Because this version is so much more valuable as a model for those of us living in the real world.
