With April Fool’s Day around the corner, companies are making all sorts of seemingly crazy announcements that have people asking a lot of questions. In this case, Krispy Kreme made a statement that they’d be changing up their iconic name.

Like all good (possible) pranks, there’s plenty of logic behind their reasoning.

The company tweeted a video announcement with a passionate spokesperson insisting they’d be changing their name for clarity. The “CDO” (aka Chief Doughnut Officer) of Krispy Kreme, Michael Davis, said going forward the company would continue to be called the same thing. Only they’d be spelling it “Cream” instead of “Kreme.”

His biggest reasoning was the fact that some people pronounce the “Kreme” of Krispy Kreme like “crème,” as in “crème brûlée.” Because the tweet comes from Krispy Kreme UK’s account, the supposed mispronouncing must be happening amongst British folk.

He assures people that the complete name rebranding will come with all sorts of new merchandise sporting the new name.

And – in a move that really makes us believe this is a joke – he even promises to rename his dog to reflect the new name.

The announcement ends with the new brand name being displayed proudly. And the music of “My Country Tis of Thee” plays in the background while Davis discusses his excitement.

Mashable.com reached out directly to the company, though the office is not officially responding to statement requests. The only thing they’d share was pretty telling.

Given the playful nature of the announcement, it’s probably safe to say we should take it with a grain of salt. The spokesperson added that people should watch their social media over the next couple days to stay up-to-date on the story.

You know, basically just watch out for the April 1 admission that this was, after all, a prank. But, we’ll all just have to wait and see.
