For many, Disney movies were a childhood staple—but according to Keira Knightley, not all Disney movies send the right message to kids. The actress revealed that she’s careful about which Disney movies she lets her daughter watch because so many entail a female protagonist getting rescued by a man. During an October 16th appearance on Ellen, Knightley explained:
The Little Mermaid is also a no-go (even though the actress admitted this one is harder).
Knightley, who plays the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s upcoming film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, revealed that not all princesses are forbidden in her household and that some of Disney’s more modern fairytales are perfectly acceptable. She said that Finding Dory, the 2016 film that DeGeneres starred in, is a big favorite in her home, as well as films like Moana and Frozen.
As much as we might always have a soft spot for nostalgic Disney movies, we have to admit: Knightley makes some good points. Thankfully, Disney has been crushing it in the female-empowerment department lately, so we still have plenty of amazing animated movies to choose from.
