Although the Grammys are a night for celebrating music, there is always bound to be a little bit of drama when it comes to who wins what award — and it didn’t take long for that to happen during the 2018 show. This time, though, the drama was found on Twitter, where fans fumed when Ed Sheeran won over Kesha at the Grammys.

Sheeran and Kesha were both nominated for the same two awards: Best Pop Solo Performance with Sheeran for “Shape Of You” and Kesha for “Praying;” and Best Pop Vocal Album, Sheeran for Divide and Kesha for Rainbow. Sheeran ended up winning both awards, although he wasn’t there to accept. It wasn’t too shocking that Sheeran nabbed both trophies, but many found it disappointing, and felt that both Kesha — AND Lady Gaga — deserved the accolades much more.

It was especially frustrating that Kesha didn’t win; not only because Rainbow is an excellent album, but also because this particular nomination felt so important. This year is the first time Kesha has been nominated for a Grammy, and she definitely deserved it. Her latest album, Rainbow, powerfully spoke to victims of sexual abuse in an intense way. It was also the product of a years-long battle with her producer and sexual and emotional abuser, Dr. Luke.

Kesha’s nominations were, as HG feels it, “almost a beacon of hope.” After a five-year battle in court with Dr. Luke, Kesha won the rights to her own music. The tragic journey was devastating to watch, but the music that came out of it is inspiring. Many found her songs deeply personal, and her nominations were a resounding message to many sexual abuse survivors that it’s possible to rise up and keep going.

It would have been amazing to see Kesha win, especially for diehard fans. They immediately took to Twitter to express their disapproval:

Some used the award to point to big issues:

The Grammy wins don’t change the fact that Rainbow is an incredible album. We hope Kesha has an amazing night regardless.
