5 things to know about Whitney Alford, Kendrick Lamar's high school sweetheart
Kendrick Lamar is one of the most prolific rappers in the music industry. But off-stage, he’s notoriously private. The rapper, who burst into mainstream success with Good Kid M.A.A.D City in 2012, may count Adele, Pharrell, Kobe Bryant, Taylor Swift, and even Barack Obama as massive fans. But he prefers to spend his downtime away from celebrity culture. In fact, if fans are looking to learn more about Kendrick Lamar’s private life, their best bet is generally giving his music a very close listen. Still, that’s not to say Lamar never opens up about his private life. A few years ago he revealed during a radio interview that he and longtime girlfriend Whitney Alford were engaged. And the rapper has, on occasion, raved about Alford.
But while the two generally keep their relationship on the down-low, the one event they do step out for together is the Grammys. Lamar is nominated for a whopping seven Grammys in 2018. And he’s already won three statues during the early awards announcements. If you catch a glimpse of Kendrick Lamar and Whitney Alford at the 2018 Grammys and want to know more about them, look no further. Here are 5 things to know about Alford and their relationship.
1The two have been together for over a decade.
Whitney Alford and Kendrick Lamar are high school sweethearts who met while attending Centennial High School in Compton, California, and have been together for well over 10 years. When asked if the two got engaged during an interview with The Breakfast Club in 2015, Lamar said, “Yeah, definitely. I’m loyal to the soil.”
2Kendrick Lamar considers Whitney Alford to be his best friend.
During a Billboard interview in 2015, Lamar revealed he doesn’t like to refer to Alford as his “girl,” noting that he considers her to be his best friend.
3Alford is not afraid to set Lamar straight.
In a 2014 New York Times Magazine profile, Lamar was asked who he considers to be the one person who can always call him out. And he immediately responded with Alford. He added, “She’s been here since Day 1.” Aww. Later in the interview, Alford made good on Lamar’s claim, joking about him being “cheap.”
4Alford and Lamar have collaborated on music together.
Alford is credited with providing backing vocals on Lamar’s hit single “King Kunta” from To Pimp a Butterfly.
5Lamar’s song “LOVE.” is reportedly about Alford.
Throughout the song, Lamar professes his love for his Alford, referencing their engagement and their longtime love for one another. With lyrics like “don’t got you I got nothing,” “you’re a homie for life,” and “I wanna be with you,” it’s safe to say the two are in it for the long haul.
