John Cena wants to be the new host of "Blue's Clues" — and Steve wants to wrestle him for it
What happens when a joke goes too far? Former Blue’s Clues host Steve Burns challenges professional wrestler John Cena to fight, that’s what. Honestly, who would ever think they’d write out that sentence? But this is not just some Ad Libs game gone awry. This is actual, real news. 2018 never stops surprising you, does it?
After Cena helped host Nickelodeon’s upfronts event last week (which is a giant presentation about the upcoming slate of new and returning series to court advertisers, investors and employees), a tweet about the wrestler-turned-actor went viral. Cena went onstage a lot during the upfront presentation, but one bit had him donning the Blue’s Clues host iconic striped polo, announcing he was auditioning to be the host of Nickelodeon’s just-announced revival of the classic kids show. Someone tweeted that joke with a photo of Cena onstage, and somehow that became treated like real news to the point where former Blue’s Clues host Burns released a video on TMZ challenging Cena for the job.
Burns starts out talking about how he was the right choice for the job back in the day because he just looked like a regular dude who could be your friend. Which, true. But then he calls out Cena for being a “super buff amazing professional wrestler” and how that’s not relatable for the kids show hosting gig.
“If John Cena is serious about hosting Blue’s Clues, he and I should wrestle for it,” Burns says. “I’m calling you out, Cena. Right now.”
That head bob at the end is just amazing, but Burns does know that Cena was joking, right? Cena’s not actually the new host of the Blue’s Clues revival, and Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami even made sure to clarify that at the upfronts presentation. “John truly is the definition of a good sport,” Adweek reported that she said after Cena walked offstage. “But he is not the host, just to be clear.”
So like, we’re just making sure you know that you don’t actually have to fight a super buff amazing professional wrestler for a job that probably won’t go to you either, Burns. Save your strength and health.
