Ikea wants to pay you to travel to Denmark and discover the key to happiness
Philosophers, scholars, and pretty much every consumer brand under the sun have been trying to figure out the key to happiness. And yet, we still haven’t cracked the code. Ikea wants to change all of that. According to the furniture store website, Ikea Denmark is searching for someone to send to Denmark for two weeks to research happiness, since the country is consistently ranked as one of the happiest in the world.
According to Curbed, Denmark’s particular brand of happiness stems from the country’s concept of “hygge,” which is pretty much anything that creates a cozy feeling or atmosphere, such as warm, fuzzy socks or sipping hot chocolate.
“We know that Danes have a strong emotional connection to their homes which they perceive as a safe space for wellness and ‘hygge’,” said Lene Gaarde, a communications manager at Ikea Denmark, to Curbed.
In 2019, the World Happiness Report ranked Finland as the happiest country on earth, with Denmark as a close second. So, what’s the secret to being happy, anyway? Is it good friends? Or exercise? Spending time in nature? Or, counterintuitively, perhaps the secret to happiness is actually unhappiness? That’s what this person is being tasked to find out.
Luckily, researching happiness doesn’t seem like hard work.
We take that to mean this person will be getting the ultimate hygge vacation.
In addition, they will be able to take personal tours with locals, home visits, special outings, dinners, talks, and some free time to explore Copenhagen for themselves, according to the Ikea website. Plus, they can get some free köttbulla (Swedish meatballs) at the Ikea restaurant. Also, this vacation isn’t just free, it’s paid. It’s unclear how much the salary will be, but it will be subject to Danish taxes. Your time spent in Denmark will also become part of a mini-documentary.
The best person for the job is someone who loves to travel, is curious, loves to learn about new cultures, enjoys being on camera, and is at least 18 years of age. To apply, fill out the application form on the website and tell Ikea a little bit about yourself and why you’re the best person for the job. Also, upload a 60-second video explaining why you’d like to research happiness.
Applications are being accepted until July 1st. For more information, visit Ikea’s website.
