What a year it’s been for BS dress codes. Remember that racist policy that banned most black hairstyles? And that time a girl got in trouble for wearing tights and a dress that went down to her knees? As if there wasn’t enough nonsense constantly taking place in the world of dress codes, this high school assistant principal just made MAJOR waves. While most discriminatory dress code policies are at least a little subtle, this VP straight up called out young girls in a super sexist way, and we’re *not* happy about it.

According to Motto, the assistant principal at Clements High School in Texas made a blatantly sexist statement — and it was recorded.

“Ladies, I know you’ve been working on your abs since the Olympics. But your shirts can’t be up here. It’s gotta cover the whole gut, OK? So, cover up…Ladies, I still blame you all for boys’ low grades because of tight clothing.” Phil Morgante said in the recording published online by The Odyssey Online.

Not only is it SO creepy to assume that girls have been “working on their abs” (like, why is this even a thought going through this dude’s head?), but it’s so, so uncool to hypersexualize the bodies of these young girls. And to blame the failings of boys on the girls?! Talk about encouraging a culture of misogyny, and also just not taking responsibility for one’s own actions.

Unfortunately, this isn’t all that rare.

Our culture still very much puts the blame on girls’ outfits instead of boys (and grown men who work at schools) controlling themselves.

As this mom explained when boys at her daughter’s school were found to be sharing sexual photos of the young girls without their consent online, and, as a result, the girls were blamed, “They feel their school has sexualised and demonized them, and compounded the problem by sending a strong message that it is them, the girls, who are responsible for the boys’ behaviour, and that the boys are the victims here.”

AMEN, MADAME! AMEN!
