Another big name is joining the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale, and we can’t wait to meet her. Cherry Jones is set to play Offred’s feminist mom, Holly, in at least one episode in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2. While sporadically mentioned during the first season, we’ve yet to actually meet Holly, who has been described as Offred’s “judgmental but loving” mom.

According to Offred, prior to Gilead, Holly was a staunch feminist trying to instill her principles in Offred, who often found them to be too extreme. After the rise of Gilead, Holly was arrested due to her activism and ideology and sent to The Colonies, a radiation-exposed wasteland where convicts are sent as a punishment. While in the novel, she’s presumed likely dead, Holly’s fate in the series has been, until now, largely unknown.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the casting news, it’s not quite yet known how Holly factors into the season, but introducing Offred’s mom on-screen is something the series has been trying to do since production on the show began. What’s more, the Colonies will reportedly play a major part in the second season of the series — with Marisa Tomei’s currently unknown character inhabiting the wasteland and Janine (Madeline Brewer) arriving, as seen in the Season 2 trailer — so it wouldn’t be surprising if that’s where we find Holly.

But it also seems likely that Jones will appear alongside Elisabeth Moss in flashbacks with Holly and Offred — especially considering Moss approached Jones for the role.

It’ll be interesting to see Holly depicted on-screen because her character and her feminism — either in flashback form or in The Colonies — will definitely serve as a stark contrast to Gilead and Commander Fred.

The Handmaid’s Tale returns for Season 2 in April.
