Ever since Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced in 2014 that they were “consciously uncoupling” — a lot of us have been nosily wondering how that uncoupling would actually play out. And so far it seems like these two are exes of the century. Paltrow stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where she revealed, in all seriousness, that Martin is more like her brother than her ex-husband.

But on a more serious note, Paltrow explained that she and Martin are just trying to do their best to maintain a sense of family for their children.

“Divorce is terrible, it was very painful, it was really hard,” Paltrow confessed. “We really genuinely wanted our kids to be as unscathed as possible. We thought if we could really maintain the family even though we weren’t a couple that was kind of the goal so that’s what we’ve tried to do.”

Just two months ago Paltrow went to brunch with Martin and her new fiancé Brad Falchuk and called their little breakfast club a “modern family.”

So, in the end, when Gwyneth said she was going to consciously uncouple, she really meant keep her relationship with her ex as healthy and close as possible. While we’re sure some divorced couples may find their new union unusual, we think just as many will relate. There are so many ways to be a family, and it’s clear that there is a lot of love in the Paltrow-Martin home.
