Gus Kenworthy burned Ivanka Trump so hard in a tweet about the Olympic closing ceremony
After two weeks of incredible artistry and athleticism, the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea have come to a close. Yesterday, February 25th, the Olympians celebrated their hard work and many victories with the closing ceremony. And although skier Gus Kenworthy was among the athletes celebrating, he also had some thoughts about Ivanka Trump’s presence at the games.
Ivanka arrived in PyeongChang on Friday, February 23rd and met with athletes from the United States on the morning of February 25th. She posed for photos with Olympians, and some even let her wear their medals. But Kenworthy was less than thrilled with Ivanka’s attendance.
Shortly before the ceremony began, the skier tweeted a photo of Team USA waiting to march into the Olympic arena for the final time. In the tweet, he praised his teammates before throwing shade at the first daughter, who marched alongside the athletes.
Ivanka was selected to head the U.S. delegation during the closing ceremony, a role that Vice President Mike Pence filled during the games’ opening ceremony.
Kenworthy, who is openly gay, has been critical of the Trump administration. He is the second member of Team USA, along with figure skater Adam Rippon, who has refused to visit the White House after the games. And the Olympian has also protested the administration’s anti-LGBTQ policies in more subtle ways. Before his final run in the men’s slopestyle competition, he shared a kiss with his boyfriend, Matt Wilkas.
Kenworthy’s anger at Ivanka and the rest of the Trump administration is completely justified, especially considering how the federal government has routinely endangered LGBTQ people with its policies. We applaud this Olympian for using his platform to protest injustice, and we congratulate all of Team USA on a great Olympics.
