This girl's graduation cap proudly highlights her missing leg, but her story is even more inspiring
Over the weekend, recent college graduate Devon Gallagher went viral when she posted this photo on Reddit.
It’s tradition to decorate your graduation cap at your college commencement. Usually, it just involves a lot of rhinestones, but for Devon, her cap became an ode to her prosthetic leg and it’s hilarious and clever and sets the bar on what graduation cap decoration can be.
“I wanted to use the saying ‘It cost an arm and a leg,’ but it didn’t cost me an arm, so somehow the idea of doing a checklist came to mind and alas the cap was made,” Devon tells HelloGiggles.
“I guess I found out at a young age that the best way to handle some rough situations is through humor,” she tells us. “I was bullied a bit as a kid and I quickly learned that if you make fun of yourself, others can’t do it for you. From that kind of stemmed the current confidence and positive-thinking attitude I have regarding my situation.”
Devon’s leg says Lehigh University, her now alma mater, and says, “It’s become somewhat of a tradition for me to hold my leg up at some point during a [football] game.”
Devon’s positive attitude is completely infections. She tells us the story of how she acquired her prosthetic leg, telling us her leg was amputated when she was four and that she’s “had great parking ever since.”
“[My leg] hasn’t stopped me from doing anything I’ve wanted to do. I don’t know if it’s my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but regardless, I’ve been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life.”
Congratulations on your graduation Devon!
