Gabrielle Union Revealed a ‘Bring It On’ Sequel Is “Absolutely” Happening
The inspiration for it might surprise you.
It’s hard to believe, but Bring It On just celebrated its 20-year anniversary—feeling old yet? Though the film spawned five direct-to-video sequels, none of the original cast made appearances in any of them, which means fans have been not-so-secretly hoping that a new movie featuring Torrance, Isis, Missy, and even Big Red might someday be in the works. At long last, none other than Gabrielle Union herself confirmed that a Bring It On sequel is happening—or, in her exact words, it’s “absolutely going to happen.”
In a recent interview with James Corden, Union explained that she joined some of the original cast members as part of a public panel, and while she didn’t name names specifically, she did say some of the OGs are “all in” on a remake.
Of course, the film has become a cult classic over the years, thanks in no small part to jazz hands, the Spirit Stick, and “Hey Mickey.”
But the catalyst for a reboot comes from a surprising source—it seems the original cast is super into Netflix’s Cheer, and it’s relatable AF.
“I think it's because we all got obsessed with Cheer on Netflix and it kind of like brought back the whole love of cheerleading, and we kinda want to see where these people would be 20 years later,” said Union.
She didn’t divulge any other details, but we do know Kirsten Dunst is game. In 2019, she told Kelly Clarkson, “If they wanted to make another movie, I would make another movie. Why not? It was so fun."
And last month, the film’s director, Peyton Reed, told Insider that he and the movie's screenwriter, Jessica Bendinger, have been in talks for a modern-day sequel that “becomes a generational cheerleader movie," he said.
"Particularly with the thematics involved, I think that could be something that would be really timely," Reed said. "And hopefully something that would not shy away from the inherent issues of the movie.”
We’re so ready to see what the most popular cheerleaders from the Clovers and the Rancho Carne Toros are up to all these years later, so we’ll be not-so-patiently waiting for more details on what the cast and crew have up their sleeves.
