The Olympics are the biggest stage any figure skater will ever be on. The world is watching you and it’s your time to shine. But for the French ice dancers Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, this moment could have gone from thrilling to terrifying if Papadakis hadn’t narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction.

In the midst of her intricate ice dance routine, the neck clasp on the skater’s outfit came undone, threatening to make her moment less about her athleticism and skill, and more about the fact that she’d flashed everyone. Fortunately, the 22 year old miraculously managed to hold onto the outfit, lessening the amount of skin the audience in South Korea saw as she and Cizeron skated to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” and “Thinking Out Loud” during the short program competition.

Gabriella Papadakis did so incredibly well at keeping it together, literally, that she and Cizeron ended up in second place after the event.

They will finish competing tonight in the free dance portion of the Ganes. The couple ahead of them, Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, are a mere 1.74 points ahead of them, meaning the French team is very much in gold medal contention.

“My costume opened up,” Papadakis explained after the short program, making her way through media interviews in tears. “It was difficult. It’s the first time that something like that happened. I tried to stay focused and finish without anything [else happening].”

In a later interview with USA Today, she called the incident her “worst nightmare.”

Her partner also discussed the malfunction afterwards, saying, “It was a great performance considering the costume issue,” he explained, mentioning that they would’ve done even better had they not faced this snafu. “That is not something you get ready for in your mind when you start the program. It is hard to stay focused.”

We’re wishing the couple good luck in the next round of competition!
