This female Olympian just set an INSANE new record
A million cheers for America, and a million and one for Morghan King. The American weightlifter is now an Olympic record breaker. She set a new American record for the snatch this week by lifting 83kg (which is about 182.9 lbs). She broke the previous record of 82.5 kgs, which was set in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
This is a big day for female athletes, and we couldn’t be prouder of King.
King may have placed sixth in the overall competition, but she’s still a star in the weightlifting event. The snatch (a rapid raising of a weight from the floor to above the head in one movement) is a notoriously tough event. And despite the fact that she just made history, she’s remained really humble about the whole thing.
King talked to NBC News about the experience.
She said, “The snatch was something I’ve been working on for a long time. The clean and jerk, I knew it was going to be a lot tougher. But, I’m happy. I still have to pinch myself that I was out there. You are in the moment and focusing on your lift, then just trying to do your best, and then it’s all over. It’s kind of surreal.”
She should be happy because she just made a seriously HUGE impact on the sport of weightlifting. Not to mention, she has a pretty positive message to go along with her new record.
We couldn’t be proud of what her record-breaking performance means for her and the future of women in the sport.
