A lot happened at the 2018 Golden Globes, but the moment no one can stop talking about is the powerful speech Oprah Winfrey made when she accepted the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award. The general public was so impressed that calls for Oprah to run for president in 2020 were soon all over Twitter and beyond.
Oprah has yet to make an official statement about any of this, so in all honesty we have zero idea whether she’s taking any of the presidential rumors seriously. Her long-term partner, Stedman Graham, was quoted saying she would “absolutely” consider a bid. However, her BFF Gayle King has indicated she’s genuinely not interested in running for office.
And while many of us know Oprah from her former daytime talk show and her various movie roles, most people know surprisingly little about the star’s background and personal life. If you’re at all curious to know more about the television personality and all-around guru, read on.
Her Early Life
Oprah, 63, was born in a small town in Mississippi in 1954, where she was raised by a single mother. The star has been open about her rough childhood, as well as the fact that her family had very little money. She has also been candid about the fact that she suffered sexual abuse as a child.
Oprah gave birth to a son when she was 14 years old, but he died shortly thereafter. While speaking to the same Australian audience she revealed that she named the child Canaan, because it means “new life.”
Oprah went to Tennessee State University for college to study radio and television broadcasting. After graduating, she became the first black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. In 1986, she started her own talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and landed a role in the movie The Color Purple, both of which catapulted her to national fame.
Oprah’s parents, Vernon Winfrey, 84, and Vernita Lee, 82, are both still living. Oprah went to live with her father, Vernon, in Tennessee during her teen years, and credits him for “turning her life around.” She says he made her conduct weekly book reports and learn five new vocabulary words a day. In 2011, Oprah revealed she discovered she had a half-sister, Patricia, who her mother gave up for adoption in 1963.
She’s been with her partner, Stedman Graham, since 1986, and says they rarely ever discussed marriage. In a recent interview with Vogue she said, “The only time I brought it [marriage] up was when I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?’ And the answer is: ‘We wouldn’t be together.’” She continued, “We would not have stayed together, because marriage requires a different way of being in this world. His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that.”
And, of course, everyone who knows anything about Oprah knows about her best friend Gayle King, the former host of the The Gayle King Show, and the editor of O, the Oprah Magazine.
She’s one of the richest people in the world — but does Oprah have have more money than Donald Trump? According to Forbes, as of right now, Oprah is worth 2.8 billion dollars, while Trump is worth 3.1 billion. If she did end up getting elected, Oprah would be the second richest president of all time.
Oprah has never officially affiliated herself with a single political party. However, she’s publicly endorsed Democrats Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Cory Booker.
It’s still unclear whether or not Oprah has any interest in running for elected office, but we are definitely going to stay on top of this one. Who knows? She might just make history yet again.
