The White House shared extremely staged pictures of Donald Trump "working" during the government shutdown
At midnight on Friday, January 19th, the federal government shut down. Democrats and Republicans couldn’t reach a decision on a budget deal circling around border security. Democrats want to protect the undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). But Republicans don’t want to move forward without funding for border security. So the government is at a standstill. This is the first government shutdown we’ve had since 2013 (and since Donald Trump became president).
President Trump and his staff are referring to the shutdown as “the Democratic shutdown.” And the White House wanted to make it known that even though the government is shut down, Donald Trump is still hard at work. So they released a series of photos of Trump completing his presidential duties. But there’s something a little off about the imagery.
Donald Trump appears so uncomfortably posed in the photos, we’d venture a guess that in these moments, instead of working hard, he’s hardly working. In one, Trump sits at an empty desk on the phone wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap. In another, the commander-in-chief walks aimlessly down a corridor. And in a third picture, he stands in a room filled with smiling staffers, including his daughter Ivanka Trump, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Still wearing the hat.
Needless to say, Twitter had a field day with these photos of Donald Trump “working.”
Here they are, in all their forced glory.
And here are some of the internet’s best reactions.
Hopefully, Donald Trump will figure out soon enough that he needs to work with actual Congress members to bring an end to the shutdown.
