In internet speak, a “stan” is defined as an overzealous and stalwart fan of a certain celebrity, athlete, movie, show, etc. So, say you’re someone who’s obsessed with Beyoncé — you could declare yourself a Queen Bey stan. Stan has long been part of our lexicon, so much so that really only those who are far disconnected from pop culture don’t know what it means. Apparently, Devon Sawa, THE STAN OF ALL STANS, is one of them, and WHAT?!

Many believe that the slang word is a portmanteau of the words “stalker” and “fan.” If you think about it, that actually makes sense due to the, for the lack of a better word, maniacal nature of stans. But if you’re a true child of the internet, you would know that it’s origins go back to an Eminem song literally titled “Stan,” which is about an Eminem super fan who, erm, turns into a murderer because his idol failed to write him back. Since then, the word’s bleak context has fallen away, and stan has crept into our everyday conversations.

But Devon Sawa, who starred as Stan in the music video — AND IS THEREFORE THE ORIGINAL STAN — seems to be the only one oblivious to the fact.

On Tuesday, March 27th, the actor took to Twitter to gush over Christina Aguilera’s Paper magazine cover with the caption “Um ….. @xtina….. wow.” When a fan asked if he stans Christina, Sawa replied, “I have no idea what stanning means… But damn, she looks smoken.'”

Uhm, excuse me?! How can Devon Sawa NOT know what stan means?!

Aside from being everyone’s first crush, starring as Stan is perhaps Sawa’s most significant contribution to pop culture! So naturally, people were #SHOOK.

But luckily, it was nothing a little stansplaining couldn’t fix.

Don’t worry, Devon, even if you never learned the meaning of the word, we’d still stan you!
