Roll your eyes and do a round of applause — our favorite deadpan, sarcastic, and non-conformist BFF Daria Morgendorffer is returning to the small screen. MTV has decided to do all of us a favor and give the ’90s animated hit show the revival treatment, along with a bunch of other classics including Aeon Flux, The Real World, and Made. Is this the best news ever or what? To echo Daria herself, WE ARE OVERCOME WITH EMOTION.
In an effort to revive and reuse 35 years worth of content, the network announced that it is launching MTV Studios, a new production unit that will handle the reboot of old shows — and also sell them to other networks and streaming sites.
Per Variety, the initial slate includes the aforementioned titles, along with two new reality shows, The Valley, a The Hills-esque program, and MTV’s Straight Up Ghosted, in which people confront those who, well, ghosted them.
The Daria revival will now be called Daria & Jodie, and is coming from the creative mind of Grace Edwards, whose work includes hits like Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Focusing on Daria and her gal pal Jodie Landon, the new series will follow the duo as they “take on the world with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender, and race.”
[qutoe]”We brought on Grace Edwards as the writer and she is a huge fan of Daria. The story she wants to tell of Daria is different,” McCarthy told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s about Daria and Jodie and two close friends taking on the world today and what’s happening in our culture at large. It’s less about the monetization and more about telling great stories.”[/quote]
A premiere date for the reboot has not been revealed yet, but we’re crossing our fingers that it’s sooner rather than later. With the comeback of Daria and the other classics, it’s like the ’90s never really left.
