Cynthia Nixon revealed that her son is transgender in a heartwarming Instagram post on Trans Day of Action
June 22nd marked the 14th annual Trans Day of Action, and Cynthia Nixon celebrated in the most supportive way possible. Nixon, who has been a longtime advocate for LGBTQ rights, shared that she has a very personal connection to TDoA. The actress and candidate for governor of New York took to Instagram to reveal that her oldest son, Samuel Mozes (who goes by Seph), is transgender.
“I’m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month. I salute him and everyone else marking today’s #TransDayofAction,” Nixon wrote alongside a sweet picture of herself with Mozes, proud in his cap and gown. It’s exciting to see Mozes living his truth for Nixon’s sizable audience.
Not only does Nixon have a bounty of followers from her iconic role as Miranda on Sex and the City, but she’s recently been placed under the spotlight again as she runs for governor of New York. For Nixon, the inclination to celebrate her son’s trans pride likely comes naturally, as the actress-turned-politician has taken many opportunities to champion LGBTQ pride.
In a 2015 op-ed about gay marriage equality that Nixon penned for Variety, she said, “Everybody has LGBT people in their family. And everybody needs to make the effort to come out in any and every way they can.”
Seph was Nixon’s first child with her ex, Danny Mozes. The two also share a 15-year-old son, Charles Mozes. And Nixon has a 7-year-old son, Max, with wife Christine Marinoni.
Nixon initially came out as bisexual. But during an interview with SiriusXM Progress, she said she didn’t necessarily identify with that label, The Huffington Post reports.
Later, New York politician Christine Quinn called Nixon an “unqualified lesbian.”
And Nixon took it in stride, joking, “She was technically right. I don’t have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs. But in my defense, there is a lot of paperwork involved.”
What a perfect response, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from
Once you read up on Nixon’s past op-eds about LGBTQ rights, it makes total sense that the gubernatorial candidate would post such a perfectly prideful Instagram pic celebrating Seph’s transgender identity. What a touching way for a mother to show her support during Pride Month.
