It’s been more than two years since Ciara and Russell Wilson tied the knot, but before they were married, they were outspoken about remaining abstinent until their wedding day. If you’re wondering how two people managed to not have sex when they’re clearly super attracted to each other, well—it sounds like for them, it was simple.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Ciara opened up about a lot of personal things in her life, including her marriage to Wilson. What pushed them to wait until they were married to have sex was their faith, and that was also what helped them stay true to their word.

According to Ciara, it was definitely a challenge for them to wait, but the fact that they were both equally committed to God made all the difference.

“It definitely was a huge challenge because
I look at my husband and go, ‘Ooh!’ I’m human…we’re human!” she said. “But the cool thing about us is that we’re equally yoked. It makes a difference when you share the same views. We were able
to be lock and step from day one.” (“Equally yoked” is a phrase often used among Christians to describe two people who are equal believers in God’s word and have a relationship with one another.)

Since Ciara and Wilson are still going strong—and seem to be killing it at parenting their daughter, Sienna, and Ciara’s son, Future—it looks like they made the right choice for their relationship. Of course, abstinence isn’t for everyone, and a decision like that is personal. Above all else, it’s great to hear that Ciara was able to find someone whose beliefs aligned so closely with hers.
