Those of us who carry the burden of a constantly mispronounced last name also know that it can sometimes feel easier to stop correcting people altogether. And it turns out Chrissy Teigen knows the struggle.

On Sunday, September 16th, Teigen revealed that we’ve all been pronouncing her last name wrong. The revelation came after a Twitter user wrote, “we pronounce Chrissy Teigen’s name wrong all the time” (as part of another conversation about how Ariana Grande’s last name is really pronounced “Grandi”). Teigen chimed in, confirming the observation.

You heard it here, folks. It’s “Tie-gan.”

This prompted one user to note that they’ve heard Teigen pronounce it “Tee-gen” herself, to which she wrote, “I know. I even correct people when they say it correctly. it’s all v. effed up.”

Teigen even had her mom, Vilailuck Teigen, confirm the correct pronunciation, adding that she’s “tired of living this lie.”

While amusing, this whole situation speaks to a genuine problem in our culture: So many people (and so often, women specifically) are conditioned to feel like correcting others on their mistakes is somehow rude or bothersome, so we stay silent. If anything, let this serve as a gentle reminder to assert ourselves more (and always ask someone their preferred pronunciation when you meet them, even if you think you’ve gotten it right).
