A "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot might actually happen — and *soon*
We’ve got a bit of reboot fever in movies and television lately. With big franchises like Star Wars coming back to the big screen and shows like Will & Grace and Roseanne returning to the small screen, there has been quite a lot of talk of other fabulous shows that could be brought back from the dead. One of the shows that most frequently get tossed into the reboot mix is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And while the Buffy fandom wasn’t holding out a ton of realistic hope that our favorite slayer would come back to kick some vampire ass after 21 years, it turns out that a Buffy reboot might become a reality.
As Deadline reports, Fox CEO and Chairman Gary Newman called Buffy the Vampire Slayer the most “ripe show we have for bringing back.” While he didn’t elaborate much beyond that statement, he was quick to add that Buffy was one of the shows they talk about reviving most frequently. However, if they bring Buffy back, it will have to be because the time is right, and inspiration has struck. But once that happens, Fox is ready to go. As Newman explained, “when Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it.”
Fox is reviving a lot of beloved shows these days, so it makes sense that Buffy is front of mind for the network. With the reboots of shows like 24, The X-Files, Prison Break, and The Greatest American Hero either on televisions now or coming soon, the network has found a lot of traction in playing the nostalgia card. While there is definitely such a thing as too much of a good thing, this might be the absolute perfect time to bring us more adventures with Buffy. We’re seeing more and more stories in movies and television all about empowering women, and it is only natural to include Buffy in that list.
Of course, just because Fox is game for a reboot doesn’t mean we’ll actually get one. Still, maybe if Joss Whedon hears how amped fans and the Fox network are to have more Buffy the Vampire Slayer, maybe it will make inspiration strike? We can hope, right?
