Billie Eilish’s James Bond theme song is out in the world, and everyone's loving her powerful vocals
After making Grammys history, Billie Eilish is adding her name to the history books again by writing and singing the theme for the 25th James Bond film. Her original song, “No Time to Die,” for the upcoming movie of the same name, dropped last night, and it’s a uniquely Eilish take on a Bond theme. But if you were ready with your “whisper-singing” criticisms, you can sit back down. The wunderkind is belting these vocals.
“No Time To Die,” which Eilish wrote with her brother and frequent collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, is classic Bond with a very Eilish twist: the haunting piano intro, the orchestral climax, that swinging-sixties guitar twang (courtesy of The Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr), and Eilish’s intimate, breathy vocals.
Later in the song, Eilish noticeably breaks form from the “whisper-singing” that’s made her famous—and gotten its fair share of criticism—and unleashes the full weight of her vocal power.
Billie can sing (which we already knew). But her fans are feeling vindicated.
Eilish is the youngest artist ever to write and perform a James Bond theme song. It’s also worth mentioning that the two most recent Bond songs—Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” for Spectre in 2015 and Adele’s “Skyfall” for the 2012 film of the same name—both won the Oscar for Best Song in their respective years.
So if Eilish also becomes the youngest EGOT winner, we wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.
No Time To Die, which is slated to premiere on April 10th, 2020, will be Daniel Craig’s final performance as MI6’s busiest and most handsome agent. The stacked cast also includes Rami Malek, Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, and Ralph Fiennes, to name a few. And we’re really excited to see how co-writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge—whom Craig has called “one of the best English writers around”—has treated the script. (Crossing our fingers for a hot priest.)
But for now, the only star we care about is Eilish, who seems to be the only person who’s surprised by her involvement in the legendary franchise. “To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honor,” Eilish said in a recent statement. “James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist. I’m still in shock.”
