Start brushing up on those compliments, because it turns out if you want to team up with your favorite celeb on a new project, a very polite note might be all you need. Fresh off Greta Gerwig’s masterful use of the U.S. Postal service to request the rights to songs from Justin Timberlake, Dave Matthews, and Alanis Morissette for Lady Bird, it appears Nicole Kidman persuaded Meryl Streep to join the cast of Big Little Lies with an email.

In an announcement that not only broke the internet but nearly caused Earth to stand still, last week it was revealed that Streep would be joining the main cast of Big Little Lies as the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård). Streep’s character, Mary Louise Wright, reportedly arrives in Monterey looking for answers regarding her son’s death —and she has “concern for the well-being of her grandchildren.”

It sounds like Streep is going to cause of a lot of drama in Season 2 — especially with Kidman’s newly widowed Celeste.

Liane Moriarty, who wrote the novel the hit series is based on and is writing the story for the second season, recently revealed to Australia’s Daily Telegraph that she wrote Mary Louise with Streep in mind, but it was Kidman who made the casting choice a reality.

It seems Moriarty’s dreaming big was everything producers needed to expand their casting net to the best in the business as a few weeks later, after demonstrating her email prowess, Kidman emailed the novelist with a simple, “Ask and you shall receive.” And just like that, Meryl was in.

Based on Moriarty’s description of Mary Louise, it seems like Streep is going to need to build a new award shelf because we see her FIRST Emmy and another Golden Globe in her future. The author opened up a bit more about Mary Louise, and it appears Streep and Kidman are in for a major showdown in Season 2. According to Moriarty , “[Mary Louise] deeply loved her son…as much as any mother can love her son. She had a slightly fraught relationship with her daughter-in-law, so it’s a very complicated, difficult time.”

We’re insanely excited to see Streep, Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon all on screen together — because there’s no way Madeline Martha Mackenzie stays out of this potential family feud.

We’re also curious to see how the relationship between Mary Louise and Perry — not to mention Mary Louise and Celeste — is depicted during Big Little Lies Season 2. With Skarsgård set to return in some capacity, hopefully we’ll see the Wright family drama from the beginning via flashbacks.
