A Bella Hadid fan account posted a photo of Hadid with her friend and fellow model Kendall Jenner when an angry internet troll decided to slide in with an awful comment about the two women. The comment claimed that both Hadid and Jenner had undergone multiple plastic surgeries and ended with, “money can get you a new face but not a nicer personality which these two girls need.” First of all, rude. Second of all, how does a random internet fan even know what Hadid or Jenner’s personalities are like? We’ve only heard Hadid speak, like one time! Ugh. Anyway, Hadid responded to the troll with the most elegant clapback ever.

"I wish you would know either of our personalities," Hadid wrote. "And not only that, I wish you would only grasp a heart of your own. Blessings to you sweetheart. Jealously is a cry for help that I wish I could help you with."

While a typical ~celebrity clapback~ uses fire to fight fire, perhaps a careful and measured dose of empathy works better in these instances. Hadid’s clapback tactic was certainly powerful.

It’s true that we don’t know much about Hadid’s personality. She’s quite the enigma and tends to stay away from public displays of drama. When The Weeknd released the new EP My Dear Melancholy last week, it was rumored that one song chronicled their breakup. Despite the speculation surrounding her name, Hadid stayed silent. The point we’re making here is that it takes a lot for her to go public with a statement, so this harsh Instagram comment was problematic enough that she needed to say something.

The next time someone slides into our mentions with an ill word, we’ll try the elegant and thoughtful clapback approach like Hadid.
