There's a huge twist in Ariana Grande's new "Break Up With Your Girlfriend" video—and it makes so much sense
The Twitter-verse erupted when Ariana Grande revealed that one of the songs on her latest album, Thank U, Next, would be called “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.” Some were sure the track was secretly about the singer’s ex Big Sean, while others were low-key mad at the decidedly un-feminist message the title seemed to implied.
However, based on the music video, which dropped February 8th in a surprise release, we were all way off.
The video features Ari in a club, eyeing a couple dancing (and yes, the guy is Riverdale‘s Charles Melton). While it at first seems like Grande wants to break the couple up so that she can be with Melton, the video soon gets more complicated (and trippy). Grande goes to a party at the couple’s home…where it seems to become clear that Grande and the girlfriend are…one and the same?
It’s of course only a theory and one specific reading of the video, but the general consensus on Twitter is that “Breakup With Your Girlfriend” is Grande singing to herself, and that the song is more about self-love than anything else.

We officially can’t wait to spend the weekend listening to every track on “Thank U, Next,” and then sifting through internet conspiracy theories. Because that’s how we roll.
