If you’ve ever felt like dating online and job hunting are similar, you’re not alone. Creating a dating profile and trying to find a match online is just like sending out your resume and waiting to see which companies call you in for an interview. There’s a ton of time and emotional effort involved in both. That’s why Lucy Guo created an app that combines the best (worst?) of both worlds: Now, you can create a dating resume that lets your social media followers send in applications and “apply” for dates.
Yeah, it’s a real thing.
The app is called Apply to Date, and it basically allows you to create a personalized webpage that looks like a dating resume. Once your “resume” is created, the app will give you a shareable URL, which can then be posted on Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, or wherever you choose to post the link. From there, your friends and followers can pretty much apply to go out on a date with you if they sign up for the app.
As founder and developer Guo told Mashable, the idea came out of the frustration she had with popular dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Raya. “Tinder felt too shallow with emphasis only on photos. OkCupid was information overload,” Guo said.
The app went live three weeks ago, and is said to be a cross between dating apps and “your own game of The Bachelor(ette).”
The Apply to Date app seems pretty easy to use.
Every profile has the same format: There’s a button at the top of the page that allows people to ask you out. There’s also space for you to write up an introduction, add background info, and state what you’re looking for and what you’re not looking for. Photos from Facebook and Instagram will also be shown.
If you match with someone, your contact information is automatically exchanged, so there’s “more intent.” Users have the option to choose how they’d like to be contacted, whether it’s through Facebook, Instagram, texting, or Twitter.
It’s a pretty interesting concept, but not entirely new. The only real difference between this and other dating apps is your ability to share links with other people. But if you’re someone who doesn’t like other people knowing you’re on dating apps, this might not be for you.
