Ann Curry says she's "not surprised" by the allegations against Matt Lauer
In her first TV interview since 2015, Ann Curry broke her silence on the firing of her former Today show co-host Matt Lauer. She said she was “not surprised” by the sexual harassment allegations made against him. In fact, she admitted that she witnessed pervasive “verbal sexual” harassment during her time at the network.
Although Curry did not mention Lauer by name, she did refer to her infamously sudden departure from the Today show in 2012.
“I’m trying to do no harm in this conversations,” she told CBS This Morning on Wednesday, January 17th. “I can tell you that I’m not surprised by the allegations. That means that, you know I’m walking down that road I’m trying not to hurt people. I know what it’s like to be publicly humiliated, I never did anything wrong to be publicly humiliated, and I don’t want to cause that pain to someone else.”
When asked directly if verbal sexual harassment was pervasive at NBC when she was there, Curry said, “It was, yes, period.” She also admitted that she had been sexually harassed multiple times in her career. However, Curry believes that the #MeToo movement is only the beginning and that the “reckoning” is long overdue.
Here’s to all the brave women coming forward, and to finally shattering that glass.
