After her case was covered in a 2016 Mic documentary, the story of Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old woman currently serving life in prison for a nonviolent drug offense, caught the attention of some influential people. In fact, if you’ve heard of Johnson and her bid for clemency, it’s probably thanks in part to Kim Kardashian. The reality TV star recently met with President Donald Trump to discuss pardoning Johnson, and now it seems that her efforts have paid off.

Today, June 6th, Donald Trump has granted Johnson clemency, meaning she’ll be released from the federal Alabama prison where she’s been held for 21 years. It’s not yet clear when Johnson will get to return home.

Johnson was convicted in 1996 of assisting in drug trafficking. Although she appealed for clemency while President Barack Obama was in office, she was not pardoned. Kardashian has been working with a team of lawyers to push for Johnson’s release since she first heard of the case, and after Trump’s decision was announced, she took to Twitter to celebrate.

After meeting with Trump on May 30th, Kardashian told Mic that she was hopeful Johnson would be pardoned.

In her Instagram Stories, Kardashian also shared a letter she received from Johnson. In the letter, the 63-year-old great-grandmother thanked the reality star, saying she was “literally helping to save my life and restore me to my family.”

We’re so glad Johnson has been pardoned, and we applaud Kardashian for using her platform to pursue justice.
