From movies to the History Channel, aliens and UFOs have been a fixture in the public consciousness for decades. But could the existence of UFOs be more than just a conspiracy theory? On December 16th, The New York Times reported that the Pentagon has a UFO program — and it’s seriously wild. Here are the spookiest things about this hidden government program.
1 The former head of the program believes aliens might have visited Earth.
Luis Elizondo, who ran the classified Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, said that he feels there is evidence that alien spacecrafts have reached Earth.
He said that the team examined an aircraft that displayed characteristics not seen in any country’s aircraft.
2 There is video footage of UFOs.
The Department of Defense released footage from three UFO sightings recorded by the program. In one of the videos, captured by a Navy Pilot off the coast of California in 2004, a school bus-sized object can be seen rotating in a way that Elizondo says “defies the laws of physics.”
In the video, one of the pilots exclaims that there is a whole fleet of similar ships. The other pilot also says that the object is going against the wind.
3 Analysts feared that Russia and China could be making secret aircraft.
According to Politico, some analysts at the Defense Intelligence Agency were concerned that the Russian or Chinese governments might have developed more advanced weapons. It was partly this concern that encouraged senators to go forward with the program. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, who founded the program in 2007, reportedly said that these fears constituted a national security threat.
In the end, though, there wasn’t much evidence to support the theory of a security threat to the U.S., and the program was disbanded in 2012.
4 The program recovered materials from UFOs.
Metal alloys recovered from UFOs during the program are currently being stored in Las Vegas. Ralf Blumenthal, who reported on the program in the Times, told MSNBC that the Department of Defense could not determine what the materials are made of.
The materials also reportedly have special properties.
You don’t have to be abducted by aliens to be blown away by the revelation of the Pentagon’s UFO program. We might not know where these mysterious flying objects came from, but we do know that, from now on, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled when we look up at the night sky.
