Here’s how you should prepare for Winter Storm Skylar if you live in New York City
In the month of March alone, New York City has been hammered by two different nor’easters — Riley and Quinn. But unfortunately, winter isn’t over just yet. A third nor’easter, Winter Storm Skylar, is bearing down on the Northeast. Here’s what to expect and how to get ready if you live in NYC.
The Weather Channel predicts that Winter Storm Skylar will make its way to the Big Apple tonight, March 12th. Blizzard conditions could continue into tomorrow, March 13th. But luckily, Skylar will be less aggressive than the two former storms, and NYC is forecast to get less than six inches of snow total.
Even though Skylar will bring less snow to NYC than other storms, you’ll still want to exercise caution. Roads will be slick with poor visibility, so avoid driving if possible, and if you have to go out, drive slowly and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going. Make sure you stock up on food and water and make sure you have flashlight batteries stocked in the case of a power outage. The Federal Emergency Management Agency warns that back-up generators should not be used indoors, so if you have one, be sure to keep it outside. Also charge your phone and keep an eye on the forecast in case it gets worse.
Now is the time to prepare if you're in the path of this #Noreaster:
🔌 Charge your devices.
🔋 Stock a kit with a flashlight, batteries, cash, & first aid supplies.
🚗 Fill your car's gas tank.
📣 Listen to local officials & monitor the forecast. https://t.co/ujiPbOF7dU— FEMA (@fema) March 6, 2018
Above all else, make sure you’re able to stay warm. Prepare blankets, and wear plenty of layers.
From high winds to thundersnow in NYC, the past two storms have brought brutal weather. We hope that Winter Storm Skylar will be the last nor’easter before spring finally arrives, but in the meantime, stay warm, New York!
