The new ‘Supergirl’ trailer is exactly what we needed to see

Back in May, we got our first trailer for CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series. We got to see Kara freak out about being on TV, backtrack out of a date and slowly transform (at least in costume) into the cape-wearing, kickass heroine that she is. But this new trailer, released on Wednesday, presents a totally different side to Kara—the real Supergirl side. If the first trailer had a little rom-com polish, this new glimpse at the series (premiering October 26th) is all about Supergirl’s actual superpowers. It’s pure superhero action and it’s refreshing to watch.

One reason I’m so excited about the series is that we don’t really see too many live-action women with super-strength, invulnerability, or indestructibility on screen. (The most recent example I can come up with is Claire Bennet from the show Heroes, in 2006.) I love watching Black Widow and Peggy Carter on screen, but neither of them could conceivably jump out of a glass elevator or get punched by the Hulk with nary a scratch. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman’s cameo in Batman vs Superman won’t be until 2016. Even Wanda in Avengers: Age of Ultron has powers that are more ephemeral.

In the book Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell, the character of Eleanor calls out the X-Men series for being sexist, to her guy friend Park’s surprise. She explains:

So seeing Supergirl pick up a plane, cleave a truck in two, and throw a man down like he’s made of nothing? It’s a pretty big deal, and I can’t wait to see it this fall.
