There’s a new superfood in town and it’s NOT what you’d expect

If you feel like every year there’s some new fad when it comes to food and dieting, you’d be exactly right. 2016 is no exception, but it might just be the most surprising. While superfoods tend to consist of no-brainers like kale and blueberries, the most recent addition to the list seems like the exact opposite of what we should be putting into our bodies. However, it’s true: the Evening Standard is one of many publications to report that black pudding just made the list of superfoods for 2016.

For those unfamiliar, black pudding is a type of blood sausage made from fat, blood, and oatmeal, and is commonly eaten in the UK and Ireland as a part of a delicious cooked breakfast. While it’s normally surrounded by greasy potatoes and buttered toast, black pudding itself is actually a great source of protein, iron, and zinc, with very little carbs.

This is according to Muscle Food, who also predict that foods like black beans, seaweed, avocado oil, and mushrooms will be among 2016’s healthiest foods, as well the rise of a trend called “souping,” which takes after juicing in a more savory way.

Whether you’re all aboard the superfood train or prefer to stick to your tried-and-true staples, 2016 is looking pretty delicious.
