Why this new type of plane could change the way we fly

Truth: Sitting comfortably in an airplane is difficult for most people. Also a truth: It’s especially especially difficult for heavier passengers who need a little extra space on long flights to fit into increasingly smaller seats. There’s good news, though: airplane manufacturers have (finally) listened to customer’s demands.

A new aircraft has been designed by Bombardier Aerospace’s C-Series, with 19-inch wide seats, a pretty good increase from the typical 17.3 – 18.5 inches you normally find in coach.

As well as the seats, this 150-capacity aircraft also boasts wider aisles, larger windows, and larger luggage bins (good for the over packers among us!).

But that’s not all the upgrades this plane has. According to a company statement, the aircraft also has a state-of-the-art cockpit and uses less fuel than older planes.

We hope these simple improvements will reduce the need for heavier passengers to be forced to purchase an extra seat on the plane and put an end to the constant fat-shaming of fliers.

Because after all, no one should have to tolerate being the subject of a cruel joke because of their weight, because at the end of the day, everyone comes in all shapes and sizes and the world must provide accordingly.

This plane will make its first commercial flight from Zurich to Paris this month, with a busy flight schedule anticipated for afterward. It’s comforting to see that such a large company is taking leaps toward positive change, and we look forward to reporting on more examples in the near future.
