Pixar’s next movie involves unicorns that eat trash, and yes, it will definitely make you cry

During the Disney Studios and Pixar Animation panel at D23 Expo – Disney’s bi-annual convention for all things Disney — the studio that brought us Up, Toy Story 3, and Inside Out announced that they’ve got another film in the works. While little was revealed about the plot of this new movie, one thing was made very clear to the audience: We are going to bawl our eyes out when we see it.

Oh, and there are unicorns in the movie that eat trash, because in this movie’s world, unicorns are like “rodents.” Not my words, but rather those of director Dan Scanlon. So there’s that.

This new movie — which doesn’t have a release date, or a title, and is simply being called, “Suburban Fantasy World” — revolves around two brothers on a quest to figure out who their father was. As Scanlon told the crowd at D23, the story is very personal to him, as it was inspired by his own life. Scanlon lost his father at a very young age, and has no memory of him; all he has is a recording of his father saying two words, “hi” and “bye.”

“In the film, we’re going to tell the story of two teenage elf brothers whose father died when they were too young to remember him," Scanlon explained. "But thanks to the little magic still left in the world, the boys embark on a quest that will allow them a chance to spend one last magical day with their father.

And where do these unicorns come in? Well, the setting for the story is this “fantasy world.”

"This is a world where long ago there was magic, real magic. But, it was hard to do and it was complicated to learn so over time people lost interest. Eventually, they created machines [and soon] had everything we had. This world is a mix of the fantastic and the every day. There are mushroom houses with a mini van parked in front of each one...[this world includes] elves, trolls, sprites, and unicorns, anything that would be on the side of a van in the ’70s."

That’s where these unicorns come in. The audience at D23 was shown a few quick concept designs for the characters in this fantasy world, one of them being three unicorns gathered around a trash can, picking food out of it like a raccoon would. I can already tell you that I will buy every single stuffed trash-eating unicorn that Disney makes into merchandise.

There’s no solid release date for this new movie, but on the safe side, might want to go ahead and start stocking up on tissues.
