These new pictures from “Anastasia: The Musical” are a perfect journey to the past
In just a few days, the highly anticipated new Broadway musical, Anastasia: The Musical opens and we seriously can’t wait. The new show, which officially opens on April 24th at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City, is an incredible new adaptation of the beloved animated film, which is based on the legend of Anastasia Romanov, the daughter of deposed king Nicholas II of Russia.
The stage adaptation of Anastasia has some key differences from the animated film — namely the absence of the evil Rasputin in favor of new villain, Gleb. With just days to go, the musical has given us a sneak peak of the show, releasing a a series of photos from the previews.
The production stars Christy Altomare as Anastasia, or Anya, who doesn’t realise she’s the daughter of the deposed king of Russia and is being hunted. In St. Petersburg, Russia, Anya meets Dmitry, played by Derek Klena, a conman who quickly becomes Anya’s love interest. Meanwhile, villain Gleb, played by Ramin Karimloo, is trying to hunt Anya down to turn her in to the Bolsheviks, who are currently ruling Russia. Mary Beth Peil (Gram from Dawson’s Creek) also stars as Anya’s grandmother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorvna.
In this photo, Dowager Empress is preparing to move to Paris, saying goodbye to young Anya in Russia.
Here it appears, Anya has her first run-ins with Gleb and Dmitry.
It sure looks like Anya and Dmitry hit it off because here they are dressed to the nines.
Finally, is this a crown we see? Could the story actually have a happy ending?
I guess we’ll have to check out Anastasia: The Musical when it opens on Monday!
