10 things we discovered watching the new ‘Muppets’ trailer
Mark this down on the calendar, because as of today, May 12th 2015, this is the best day of my life. That’s because today, ABC unveiled its brand new, inspirational, celebrational, Muppet-ational trailer for The Muppets—the series! Just imagine me flailing my arms around in the air, IRL, just like Kermit.
This new Muppet show, premiering in the fall, will be more of an “adult” series, as Kermit, himself, explains in the trailer. It’s been mentioned before this new show will have a 30 Rock feel, so that means it’s going to be a show about making a new Muppet show (super meta), but it’ll also follow the Muppets home, too. Oh, and it apparently includes talking-head situations, like we’ve seen before on Parks and Rec and The Office. The Muppets is shaping up to be the best show on television ever (probably). As Sam the Eagle says, “God bless America, and it’s magnificent broadcasting company.” AGREED, SAM THE EAGLE. AGREED.
Here are some of the amazing things that happen in the 2 minutes and 52 seconds of the trailer:
1. ALL THE MUPPETS ARE BACK. Yes, Walter, too.
Including, Walter, who was first introduced in 2011’s The Muppets!! Can I put in a request to know the locations of Bean Bunny, Rizzo, Bobo the Bear, and Camilla the Chicken?
2. The coffee cup says “Bean & Beluga”
If I were Dean & DeLuca, I would be so honored right now.
3. Rolf’s in the cone of shame
But he put it on himself, because of his stitches. Also, shout-out to Scooter. I’ve named many fish Scooter because of him. Do you think we’ll ever find out what happened to his sister, Skeeter, last seen on Muppet Babies?
4. Fozzie’s got a girlfriend?!
So jealous of this girl right now. Do you know how funny Fozzie is?
5. Miss Piggy can’t remember anyone’s name
Miss Piggy’s got star power now, and is the last hold out to come back for this new show. In the time she’s spent away from the Muppets, she seems to have forgotten everyone’s name, and now Gonzo is Gary, and Dr. Teeth is just “the tooth guy.” But they’re her family, none the less.
6. I need more Sweetums
Yes, it’s impossible for me to pick my favorite Muppet, don’t ask. Someday I think it’s Gonzo, other days I’m convinced it’s Sam the Eagle. Every day, though, I’ve got a huge soft spot for Sweetums.
7. Even the obscure Muppets are around
OK, fine I’ll admit I can’t name this Muppet off the top of my head, but I know I’ve seen him before. Do you realize how many Muppets there are throughout the entire run of the original Muppet Show? And that’s not including The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Muppet Christmas Carol, John Denver and the Muppets: Christmas Together (super obscure from 1979,) The Muppets, Muppets: Most Wanted, AND Muppets From Space? OK, everyone do yourself a favor and watch Muppets From Space, because Joey and Pacey from Dawson’s Creek make a cameo in it — and I bet you didn’t know that off the top of your head.
8. Gonzo has hot peppers on his shirt
That is all.
9. Waldorf and Statler, still not amused
OF COURSE, these two wound up in a test audience for the show. OF COURSE they hated it. We love them because they hated it.
10. This TV show is already okie-dokie
I just really love the Muppets, and I love Jim Henson, and I love the legacy that Jim Henson left behind with his Muppets. If someone could wave a magical wand and turn me into a Muppet, I’d do it. So am I the most excited to have Muppets back in prime time, in a show that’s already shaping up to be witty, hilarious, and amazing? Most definitely.
While there’s no premiere date set for The Muppets yet, it does have a time slot: Tuesdays at 8pm. Can. not. WAIT.
