Get ready for a brand new Kurt Cobain solo album

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen has just dropped some very exciting news: an album of never-before-heard songs from Kurt Cobain is coming our way this summer.

This is not a drill, and we are not above a fangirl freakout. Morgen combed through over 107 cassettes and 200 hours of audio in order to create the new documentary, and in an interview with Bedford + Bowery, he has officially divulged that they’re putting together some of the still-unreleased music for a new album. As of now, it’s unclear what it will include, but based on what Morgen found in Cobain’s vault, it’s guaranteed to be worth a listen.

“The audio ran the gamut from jam sessions with Courtney, some jam sessions with various friends and Nirvana, his first demo tapes, his Fecal Matter demos, his mix tapes and oral canvases like Montage, a lot of silly spoken word stuff and not-silly spoken word stuff like the story he told of losing his virginity, covers of the Beatles songs,” Morgen told Bedford + Bowery. “Kurt, in essence, was creating an oral and visual document of his experiences throughout his life and he did it in such a raw and visceral way.”

Montage of Heck is a reflection of Morgen’s finds, and an intimate, heartbreaking portrait of Cobain as a result — the album is just an added bonus. The news also comes after endless rumors that Cobain had been working on solo music prior to his death, and after hearing his cover of the Beatles’ “And I Love Her” last month, we can’t wait to hear what else is to come.

The album of home recordings will feel like you’re kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Washington as he fiddles about. It’s going to really surprise people,” Morgen said. “Just to be clear, it’s not a Nirvana album, it’s just Kurt and you’re going to hear him do things you never expected to come out of him.”

Check out the rest of the interview for yourself over at Bedford + Bowery, and watch Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck in select theaters now and on HBO May 4.
